The jaded view of safety in the work place is unfortunately fairly common and yet the successful management of health and safety can be remarkably simple and minimal in cost to develop.

There is a legal requirement for businesses to avail themselves of competent advice to achieve safety and health in the workplace. This does not imply that every work place should employ a professional safety advisor; this would be too onerous for small or low risk premises. Ideally a member of management should be designated to provide safety advice to the management team, and that person should receive sufficient training and have access to time and materials to enable them to make a reasonable contribution.
